Did you know that fresh salsa is really easy to make? I grew up eating salsa from a jar and didn’t realize simple it is to throw together, even when you are busy.
Salsa is very nutritious because it is full of antioxidants and polyphenols.
Cilantro helps get rid of heavy metals and garlic fights infections in the body.
Most salsa from the supermarket has preservatives and additives.
Things like citric acid that can be derived from corn, a common food sensitivity.
Ingredients list from a popular national brand salsa:
CRUSHED TOMATOES (WATER, CRUSHED TOMATO CONCENTRATE), JALAPENO PEPPERS, DICED TOMATOES IN TOMATO JUICE, FRESH ONIONS, DISTILLED VINEGAR, DEHYDRATED ONIONS, SALT, GARLIC, NATURAL FLAVORING.
The one above only has one unfavorable ingredients but many others on the market have 3-4. Some salsas (like the brand above) even have natural flavors which can be the food industry’s way of adding MSG without telling us. It can even be parts of animals that I assure you we don’t want to be eating (beaver anal glands). Trust me when you see the word natural flavors it is so ambiguous, please run the other way or just whip up some of my easy homemade salsa in a jiffy!
It is also a good idea to buy organic tomatoes because they are in development to be genetically modified (could be on the shelves anytime). Also tomatoes are on the dirty dozen list of most contaminated with pesticides so be on the safe side and choose organic tomatoes whenever possible.
