Paleo Friendly and Gluten Free Restaurants in San Francisco
Do you like to go out to eat, but always feel gross afterwards because of poor food quality? There are a few places that almost as good as cooking for yourself. These gluten free friendly restaurants have healthy, organic, and sustainable choices that won’t break the bank.
Paleo Friendly and Gluten Free Restaurants in San Francisco
Roam Grass Fed Burger Marina
I always get the classic burger with double meat in a lettuce wrap, no sauce. I also get the side salad with their house homemade dressing. Grass fed beef is full of Omega-3’s and a powerful fat burner called CLA,and has 100 less calories per serving than factory farmed beef.
Pacific Catch Marina, Sunset
This place has excellent wild fish dishes and salads. Just ask the server for a copy of their gluten free menu.
Plant Organic Cafe Marina, Embarcadero, Finacial District, SFO Terminal 2
This place can be pretty pricey but I get a Cobb salad with double organic chicken, which fills me up. One bad thing is they do not have beef or bacon but if you feel like a light meal it is good. The chicken curry is pretty good too. The simple lemon dressing they serve is just right, homemade, no chemicals. They also have some good egg dishes all day as well as wild salmon cooked several different ways.
Il Pollaio North Beach
This is one of my favorite places in North Beach, that specializes in whole grilled chickens. They cook them perfectly with so much flavor infused. The side items are not to be missed, such as the grilled onions, cold marinated eggplant, and a great side salad served with big bottles of balsamic and olive oil.
Bang San Thai Tenderloin
This place is one place I go almost every week. They feature anti-biotic free chicken from Fulton Valley Farms. They cook primarily with coconut oil and have a spot on the menu relating it’s benefits. They have amazing red and green curries, I get them in a bowl with no rice. Also the Tom Ka Gai coconut milk soup is out of this world. The Papaya salad is also unbelievable, my preference is with added shrimp. You can’t go wrong here with the prices and big portions. Now in 2011, the websight says they feature grass fed beef and lamb. The Thai owner/ cook understands about soy sauce and gluten so they are very considerate about any dietary needs or substitutions.
Aicha Nob Hill
This Moroccan restaurant is so awesome and affordable. They have a great appetizer salad plate with an eggplant salad and a cooked red pepper salad which are so tasty. They have an awesome side salad with artichoke hearts, feta, and olives. For main dishes they have plenty of options, such as the leg of lamb braised with peas (I try not to eat the peas) and artichokes. The Royal Kebab plate minus the couscous is a personal favorite. The same chef has opened a new restaurant downtown that I cant wait to try, called Mourad.
La Boulange, Russian Hill, Union Square, Noe Valley, North beach, Hayes Valley…….
If you are on Polk st. or many other various locations around the city. You can’t go wrong with this place. They have organic eggs cooked your way, all day. I love adding smoked salmon and veggies to eggs. They have an awesome smoked trout salad, just say no to the bread and you will be on the right track. The Chef salad and Nicoise salad minus the potatoes are also great choices. The dressing is made in house with lemon and olive oil.
Pluto’s Inner Sunset, Marina
This place has a great create your own salad option that keeps me full. My favorite part is watching every step and choosing my ingredients. They also let you apply your own olive oil and vinegar or lemons. You can add your own meat of choice as well. This place is quick easy and cheap.
Blue Barn Gourmet Marina, Rumors of one opening on Polk St. 2012
This place is very similar to Pluto’s, because you get to watch your food being made. I do love to cook and am OCD about my food choices it lets me have that sense of control I need. This reminds me on New York City where there is a make your own salad place on every corner. Also you can get in and out, also be full for under $10. This place is great for people who hate to cook don’t want to feel like jumping off the GGB after they eat.
Ferry Building
This place is out of this world amazing. I get the Mary’s organic rotisserie chicken and with a side item for only $12. It is very filling and so juicy. They have Marin Sun Farms grass fed beef brisket too. It feels good to support a local farmer who raises animals in an responsible way. The best case scenario is when chickens eat organic soy free feed and are able to be in the sunshine eating bugs and worms.
Beautifull Laurel Village, Castro I like this place because it has all the ingredients listed on the tags, so no guess work about allergies. They have some great prepared meats, salads, and vegetables. I got the Meyer lemon green beans with fresh tuna salad and it was so fresh and flavorful. You get a decent plate of protein and a side for about $10. So as long as I get full and I know what is in it, I am happy.
Cooking at home with seasonal, local, and organic ingredients is always best, but sometimes you just want to get out of the house. Half of the fun of living in San Francisco is for the food, so it is nice to know there are some great places that share high standards like pasture raised meat and organic produce. If you need advice about what to eat and how to feel your best again.
