What is Maca: It is a cruciferous root vegetable grown in the Andes mountains of Peru that looks like a cross between a radish and a turnip.

Benefits of Maca:

  • Maca is an adaptogenic root that helps your body handle and manage stress
  • It’s known for increasing libido

  • Promotes fertility in men
  • Maca can help menstrual issues and reduce menopause symptoms

Take Note and Caution:

If you are pregnant or lactating you should avoid taking maca.

Maca is a goitrogen so be careful if you have thyroid issues.

Always talk to your doctor before taking a new supplement and check for possible interactions with other medications.

Would you recommend this for adolescents or caution against it? I never see nutrition and holistic advice in reference to its safety and use with children so I never know what to do!

    Thanks!

You can do a lot with food. I would just work on the your persons diet, making sure they get protein and fat every meal will go a long way. Try to reduce processed food, sugar and bread and the hormones usually start to regulate. Also look at sleeping enough and some movement.

I am wondering if this raises testosterone levels. I have PCOS, polycystic ovary syndrome, which cause unnaturally high testosterone levels in women.

When you refer to coconut milk in this recipe, is it coconut milk beverage? Or full-fat coconut milk (canned version)? If it’s the beverage, is that too processed for Paleo? Are there certain brands you like?

Click the link and you will see the type I recommend. I only use full fat from a can unless I make my own.

What’s your opinion on gelatinized maca powder versus raw? I’ve read gelatinized is better for the digestive system. Just curious!

sounds like you know more than I do about it..I like to get my gelatin from bones!

what are your thoughts on just taking this in pill form?

    • Caitlin Weeks says

I would just be cautious and see how you feel. If you have a thyroid problem I would check you levels often.Make sure to get plenty of iodine. Remember this can’t make up for lifestyle and diet interventions to balance hormones.

Im an 80/20 paleo lifestyle. i was looking into this more for a libido boost as I have none since the birth of my daughter. My doctor has no help in this department so I am looking into holistic methods.
        Thanks

I am wondering why maca should be avoided while lactating. Thanks!

    • Caitlin Weeks says

      August 3, 2013 at 10:09 pm

I am not sure but that is what the sources I read advised. It is always a good idea to err on the side of caution during pregnancy and lactation.

I consume 1 tsp per day, and I have been lactating for years. I think the maca really helps with the fluctuating hormones lactating made me feel. Just my experience. I only use Navitas gelatinized maca. I read that was best.
