7 Keto Diet Mistakes I Learned From Doing the Carnivore Diet
1- Eating too many nuts
One thing that I was doing wrong when I was eating keto is I was eating a lot of nuts and nut butters. Such things really didn’t digest well and always gave me a stomach ache. I love peanuts and peanut butter but whenever I eat those it would be very hard for me to stop. They are very addictive and have a lot of carbs and calories. Once I cut those out of my diet when I went carnivore, my digestion got better. I feel like it really helped me lose a lot of weight.
2- Being afraid of protein
Another mistake that I made while following the keto diet was being afraid of protein. It is commonly believed that consuming too much protein triggers a metabolic response that turns protein into sugar and increases your blood sugar levels and takes you out of ketosis, which is not true. This process is called gluconeogenesis. Contrary to popular belief, it is not something to be overly concerned about when following a ketogenic diet. So consuming not enough protein turned out to be a mistake but I only realized it when I became a carnivore.
On a Carnivore diet it is not appropriate to limit your protein intake. What I found since doing carnivore is that I can eat an abundance of protein. Of course, I always used to eat fat with my protein or just eat fatty meat cuts when I was doing keto but you know that was really not helping me at all because I was getting too much fat and not enough protein and it slowed down my weight loss. I really think that’s a myth that is perpetuated a lot in keto. Protein is essential for building and repairing your muscles and other tissues. Protein is more satiating than fat, especially for me. Try a higher protein approach for just a little bit and I bet you will be feeling much better. It can also help you feel full and satiated so you don’t overeat, which can help with weight loss.
3- Too many vegetables
My major mistake while doing the ketogenic diet was eating too many vegetables and it just made me miserable. I was just loading up on vegetables. Sometimes I ate too many and I wouldn’t really count my carbs, and because they were just low starch vegetables I thought it was okay. But I found that I was constantly bloated and uncomfortable due to poor digestion. Eating all those vegetables really hurt my stomach, gave me heartburn, burping and bloating every time I ate them but I was eating all in the name of fiber, also to be full.
I was adding a lot of fat to my vegetable- filled keto meals. I was probably getting too much carbohydrate with my keto meals because I thought well this will fill me up and I won’t be eating other things that might make me gain weight. So it’s a slippery slope there with the vegetables and you have to be careful about the carbs.
It is something worth considering that these vegetables can be a hidden culprit of digestive pain and we don’t even realize it until we remove them and that’s something I realized when I did a carnivore diet and this helped me lose weight quickly. So you have to realize the importance of being mindful of the vegetables you eat. Constant gas and bloating as well as heartburn could be signs that something isn’t right. Watch this video to know why I stopped eating vegetables and fruits and adopted a carnivore diet.
4- Too many treats and fat bombs
Another mistake I made while following the keto diet is that I was eating a lot of fat bombs, sweets and treats. These things were very high in calories and very high in fat but they weren’t really satisfying at all. Even though they were made with fake sugar like stevia, erythritol or monk fruit, they also tend to trigger cravings. It is best to steer clear of all sweeteners, even non-caloric ones, as our brain cannot distinguish between them and indulging in them can make us crave sweeter foods.
From my own experience, I have discovered that every day I was eating dark chocolate or maybe Lily’s chocolate or zevia or some kind of kevita or any drink that was sweetened, it increased my need for sweet foods and sugary snacks. I was wanting some kind of treat after every meal and that was just adding a lot of calories and a lot of fat to my daily diet and I wasn’t really ever tapping into the fat on my body so that was another mistake.
Once I got started as a carnivore, my cravings completely went away and now I don’t have any cravings for artificial sweeteners or natural sweeteners or anything like that anymore. It feels just amazing and so freeing. I have always been a dessert person that loves to eat and make keto treats but now I don’t even think about dessert so how I have got that monkey off my back and I finally kicked my addiction for sweets and treats has been amazing since I started following a carnivore diet.
5- Too much dairy
One of the big mistakes that I made while being on a keto diet, was eating too much dairy. Many people have sensitivity to dairy, especially when someone has Hashimoto’s, dairy can be a big irritant and can cause inflammation. It can slow down your weight loss results on a ketogenic diet.
Dairy is very addictive and too easy to overeat. So It is very hard to cut the dairy out of your daily diet, especially when you are on keto. I tried to cut it out many times while being on keto eating but sometimes when you get into keto you just hear about dairy all the time. And there’s a lot of recipes out there that make you think that well I can handle it so you start eating it all the time. You could be intentionally ignoring what dairy does to your body.
But when I went to the carnivore, I got another chance to really eliminate the dairy and that really helped with my results on the carnivore diet. I think it probably would help anybody who’s doing keto to really cut back on that dairy. Now I use ghee that has the dairy proteins removed and if you haven’t ever cut out dairy just give it a shot and you will feel better for sure. Try giving up dairy for just like 30 days and see how it affects your results and you will be happy when the scale starts moving again. 6- Not taking electrolytes
Not getting enough electrolytes is another big mistake that I learned about only after I started doing carnivore. I never really paid attention to electrolytes when I was doing keto because I always felt fine. But when I started doing carnivore I didn’t feel so fine and the keto flu was intense which meant that my body was getting rid of electrolytes too fast. Many people end up giving up on a carnivore diet too early due to not getting enough of essential minerals such as salt, potassium and magnesium.
I wasn’t replenishing them well enough with salt so what I do now is I keep a little thing of salt in my purse all the time and I just put it in my tongue. I really love this Redmond Real salt. You can get it here. You wouldn’t believe how good it tastes and this has all the right balance of electrolytes that we need and I need this so much more when I’m a carnivore, and maybe I did it on keto but I just didn’t realize it.
Fortunately, there are several ways to ensure that you’re getting enough electrolytes. So definitely make sure your electrolytes are in check, keeping salt with you at all times when you’re doing carnivore or keto. You can also drink bone broth that really helps to keep your electrolytes in balance. Find my bone broth recipe here on my blog or watch me making carnivore diet bone broth in an instant pot in this video. Adding an electrolyte supplement like this to your daily routine can also help keep your levels up. My sister has created her own carnivore diet electrolyte drink recipe that you can find on my blog here.
7- Carb creep
The last thing I want to talk about is carb creep that you might not realize when you’re eating a lot of nuts and a lot of veggies. All these things have carbs and they creep up. It’s very hard for me to count carbs and macros and that’s one of the things that I love about carnivore diet is you don’t have to do that anymore. I don’t want to worry about that. I have been dieting since I was a little kid and it really triggers all my buttons when you say you have to count this and that while being hungry all the time. So that’s why I love carnivore diet. You can eat as much as you want and you don’t have to count your protein and fats. You can have zero carbs basically the whole day. You don’t have to think about it because you’re not eating anything that has carbs, just eat meat, fat and water or ice tea or coffee. If you’re choosing to eat these things and it’s so much easier that I don’t have to worry about how many carbs I am eating, which actually makes you go crazy on the keto diet. The idea of how many net carbs is just maddening. So that really is a great freedom that I found in carnivore diet and one of the big keto diet mistakes I was making.
So to step up, you want to make sure that you are avoiding sweeteners. Don’t eat your fat from fat bombs and stuff like that, eat fats from meat and that is a great thing that I learned for doing carnivore diet. Also nuts have a lot of carbs and calories and they are very addictive so avoid eating nuts. Also cut back on veggies. There’s no need to stress about needing vegetables often since many of them were not around for a long time, and are only recently invented. They cause a lot of digestive distress and inflammation because they’re hard to digest and have a lot of carbs and you might not realize all the carbs that creep into your daily eating and the fiber can just be a big problem for a lot of people. So definitely cut back on your veggies and you will feel amazing and much better than before. Watch my video about how removing fiber and vegetables in favor of a carnivore diet will help people to poop normally without constipation issues here.
Once I switched to a carnivore diet, I didn’t have to worry about the carbs creeping in as they were taken care of while being on keto because there’s none and you can stay zero carb all day due to all the carnivore foods you eat on this plan. So you don’t have to count everything and that’s a great benefit of a carnivore diet. Read my carnivore diet story here.
