Easy Post Workout or Meal Replacement Blueberry Super Smoothie (Paleo, SCD, Gaps, Dairy Free)

July 1, 2013 By Caitlin Weeks

Protein powders are bad news. They are full of processed ingredients that are usually by-products of the tofu or dairy industry. People always ask me what a good protein powder they can use for breakfast on the run but there are not that many good choices.

Whey protein can be problematic because many people are allergic and it is almost impossible to find a good protein powder that is not made from degraded, pesticide-filled, cow’s milk. A good one, if you are not sensitive, is grass fed, cold processed whey,  like this one, but an even better choice would be grass fed raw milk.

You can also put raw eggs in your smoothie if you get them from a farmer and they are pastured and soy free.

The best choice in my opinion for smoothies and shakes is the grass fed gelatin.

I suggest you to try this easy post workout or meal replacement blueberry super smoothie made with grass fed gelatin!

Benefits of grass fed gelatin

  • helps heal the gut lining (very important for whole body health)
  • reduces cellulite and wrinkles
  • helps build lean muscle
  • easily digested and absorbed
  • reduces inflammation
  • helps build bones and joints
  • boosts metabolism
  • helps balance hormones

Btw…..You can also get it in my awesome bone broth!

Now that it is summer some people don’t like to eat hot broth or soup.

Gelatin is a great way to get the benefits of bone broth without the hot winter soups.Easy Post Workout or Meal Replacement Blueberry Super Smoothie

Serves 1

Ingredients:

1 cup coconut milk, full fat (this one has no BPA or guar gum!)

Or grass fed raw milk if tolerated

2 cups blueberries (organic is best)

2 cups of ice

3 Tbsp of gelatin (I like this one because it is from grass fed cows)

Stevia or honey to taste

Directions:

Put everything in the blender except the gelatin.

Pulse until the ice is broken down and everything is liquified.

Add the gelatin while the blender is going for a few more seconds.

Serve and enjoy!

Hi Caitlin, do you take gelatin daily, along with homemade bone broth? Do you know how much protein is in 3tbls? Thank-you!

      I think I said it was 18. I meant to say that…

Does the gelatin ‘gel’ shorty after making this? I usually make a batch of smoothies that last a couple days. Is collagen better to use?

I dont know what you mean by collagen, gelatin is full of callagen. I don’t leave mine. I just drink it right away, so I dont know.

I made a smoothie with a couple tablespoons of Great Lakes gelatin (red can) the other day and was disgusted by the texture! I’m used to putting raw egg yolks in for a creamy finish, and the gelatin made the smoothie kind of grainy. Do you think it’s because I put in the gelatin right at the beginning and maybe over-blended it, instead of adding it at the end like you suggest?

    • Caitlin Weeks says

      July 2, 2013 at 1:01 pm

Yes that is why I suggest it at the end.

I use Great Lakes Collagen (green can) for this purpose. Same health benefits but dissolves better in cold liquids.

You can also replace the gelatin with Chia seeds (I use milled seeds) Chia seeds thicken every smoothie and add lots of good stuff as well

Gelatin has more benefits than chia. Chia can be hard to digest and cause problems for people with autoimmune diseases. I only use it occasionally as an egg substitute in recipes.

HI Caitlin! I look forward to trying the gelatin. I enjoyed reading your life story. I have a similar story myself (marathon runner not losing the weight I wanted and terrible energy levels) that sparked my interest in going back to school for Clinical Nutrition. I think it is wonderful you are getting some great information out there to others. We have a lot of work to do! 🙂

you say this recipe serves one. I don’t think I could drink 5 cups alone, sounds like a lot!

Eat as much as you want! Thanks for reading.

I add an avocado to a similar smoothie recipe for creaminess. I’ve only been adding 1 TBSP of gelatin and it doesn’t make in grainy. I can see the benefit of adding more.
