Book Review: Digestive Health with Real Food
Thorough does not begin to describe this tomb of information. I have known Aglaee Jacob for a long time through cyber space and her work has always impressed me. She is a Registered Dietician who got fed up with the dogma at her diabetes educator job in a conventional setting and told them to take this job and shove it. At the same time she started having her own digestive problems. She traveled the world for a few years trying to find herself with her husband. Then she decided to go back to school to become a naturopathic doctor. She found the answer to her ailments were simple meaty paleo foods combined with Weston A Price and Gaps principles such as fermented foods and bone broth.
This book is full of charts and graphs with easy to understand language. She helps you customize a diet to your needs full. When I was in school the only book we had was Digestive Wellness by Liz Lipski, which is a great book, but it included many foods that don’t help digestion such as beans and rice. This book cuts right to the chase so you don’t have to waste time feeling like crap while you experiment with hard to digest foods.
She has lots of great info about how stress affects digestive health and I am so glad she gave that issue a whole section. She tells us how to do an elimination diet and how to add foods back in to test for reactions. She has a full section on supplements which starts with liver, bone broth and fermented foods. Those are my kind of supplements! She even has sections on what to do about constipation, fatigue, and sugar cravings.
If someone in your life is struggling with poor digestion or IBS this book would change their lives probably in just a few weeks. This is advice is cutting edge and second to none!

Book Review: The 30 Day Guide to Paleo Cooking
Their 30-Day Guide is divided in to three parts:
- An overview of reasons that paleo is healthier (than the SAD or any other diet).
- A 30 day menu plan and shopping list
- 75 recipes that are easy to prepare and budget friendly
This is a great book about how to implement the diet that is, as usual, filled with the amazing food photographs that they are well known for. The pictures look so good that people won’t mind going without their bread for 30 days. I have known Bill and Hayley for several years and I know how hard they work, practically non-stop. They have a passion for their Paleo lifestyle and they want to bring it home to you in the prettiest package possible.
They have been very open about themselves, sharing Hayley’s thyroid troubles and Bill’s nagging IBS and leaky gut. These stories that the authors share help the reader feel understood its motivating info that let’s them know they can get to the other side of their health challenge. They also let the reader know what to expect while going through their elimination diet which is helpful to know you were not the first person to feel some unpleasant symptoms.
I loved their first two books, Gather and Make it Paleo, which were instant classics for any real food kitchen. I know you will not be disappointed with this purchase that will break down this drastic lifestyle change into manageable bites for any age or lifestyle.
