How to Lose Weight with Hypothyroidism

People always ask me about ways to lose weight with Hashimoto’s thyroiditis (hypothyroidism) and it can be a challenge but when these 3 factors are dialed-in the scale will start to shift. 

Few things are more discouraging than going to the gym 5 days per week and gaining weight. If you suffer from hypothyroidism, you very likely have had this experience (or one similar to it). In this article, we’ll outline the first three steps to lose weight with hypothyroidism.

Quick Rundown: Meet Your Thyroid

Your thyroid is a small, butterfly-shaped gland that sits right in front of your wind pipe. It is responsible for producing hormones that control metabolism, energy and growth. If your levels of thyroid hormones are low (AKA, hypothyroid), you will often experience symptoms such as extreme fatigue, weight gain, hair loss, feeling cold, weak muscles and joints, dry skin, trouble concentrating, depression and/or constipation.

First 3 Steps to Lose Weight with Hypothyroidism

While losing weight with hypothyroidism isn’t easy, here are three steps you can begin today that can make a huge difference:

Eat an Anti-Inflammatory Diet

Acute (short-term) inflammation in response to a stressor such as an injury or stressful event is normal and necessary. What is problematic is long-term (chronic) inflammation that is internal, and therefore, largely unseen.

Chronic inflammation plays a major role in weight loss resistance (not to mention a myriad of chronic and degenerative conditions), and if you have hypothyroidism, this holds especially true. The two main dietary culprits that can lead to inflammation are sugar and grains.

Studies show that sugar is a leading cause of insulin resistance, which is also linked to hypothyroidism. Insulin resistance has been studied as a natural consequence of hypothyroidism, or it could be the other way around (kind of a which came first, the chicken or the egg scenario).

Unfortunately, grains are converted to sugar by your body, so basically pose the same problem as sugar. Your best bet for losing weight with hypothyroidism is to bid farewell to grains and sugar alike, except for modest amounts of natural sugar from fruit.

Get Your Medications Right

First and foremost, getting the right testing done and finding medications that work for you is key. Unfortunately, many people go years without the proper diagnosis or medications, and this can wreak havoc on your body (and your life). You’ll need to find out if your hypothyroidism is autoimmune in nature or not (Hashimotos Disease is the autoimmune version of hypothyroidism), which will be treated differently than non-autoimmune hypothyroidism (although the dietary guidelines discussed above still stand).

While some people want to treat their hypothyroidism with diet and lifestyle alone, others find that hormone replacement medications are necessary and can dramatically improve quality of life. And, they might not be a permanent (or they might be), but perhaps you only need them to get your body back on track.

Manage Your Stress and Heal Your Adrenal Glands

Last but certainly not least, never underestimate the impact that stress can have on your health and your thyroid function. In fact, chronic, high-level stress is one of the main triggers of autoimmune hypothyroidism, largely due to the role in plays in damaging your gut (another important factor in losing weight with hypothyroidism), and inflammation.

Your adrenal glands are two, grape-sized glands located near your kidneys, and are responsible for producing stress hormones (cortisol topping the list). Research shows that high stress levels over time can damage your adrenal function, which in turn could cause problems for the hypothalamus and pituitary glands that work to regulate the thyroid.

In short, it’s a complex cascade of hormonal production and reactions that can play a leading role in hypothyroidism and weight loss resistance. Stress management is largely individual, so find what works for you to lower your stress levels (hint: start with just 10 minutes per day of deep breathing).

Hypothyroidism can make weight loss feel impossible, but it doesn’t have to. By adopting a Paleo diet and eliminating inflammatory foods, healing your adrenal glands and making sure you are taking the right medications and/or supplements, you can start shedding that excess weight your body has been holding onto.

Top 3 Dangers of a Vegan Diet

Of all the health crazes in past and recent years, the vegan diet is potentially the most dangerous one for our health. While not one exact form of eating works perfectly for everyone, the very real (top 3) health risks and danger posed by a vegan diet are important to understand.

Many people hear the word vegan and mistake it as synonymous with healthy,  a big misconception that can lead to serious consequences if a completely plant based diet is followed long term.

Needless to say, getting plenty of fresh vegetables and fruits in your diet (especially veggies) is important to achieve optimal health and prevent future disease and degeneration.

However, the human body can easily become deficient in essential nutrients and complete protein on a vegan diet. Here are the top 5 dangers that many people are unaware:

Micronutrient Deficiency

Plain and simple, humans are meant to be omnivores that eat both plants and animals.

While we can (and must) obtain certain minerals and vitamins only from plants, the same goes for key nutrients that can only be obtained from animal sources.

Primary examples are vitamin B12 that is involved in functions of most every cell in the human body, and is only found in animal sources (in fact, studies show that over 90% of vegans are deficient in this important nutrient), alone with creatine, that is essential for creating energy for our cells.

Other examples are carnosine, which protects against degenerative processes and diseases, and DHA, an omega 3 fatty acid that is most bioavailable via animal sources.

Protein and Fat Deficiency

It is extremely challenging for vegans to eat enough protein, as animal sources truly are the ones that offer balanced amino acid profiles, which is necessary for muscle mass, bone health and body composition.

While many vegans demonize the consumption of saturated fats and cholesterol, the truth is that having too low an intake of these two nutrients is actually far more dangerous.

Cholesterol is a key precursor to hormone production and balance, and saturated fats are also needed for healthy hormonal balance and cognitive function. Saturated fats are harder to find in vegan diets but they are plentiful in ancestral diets based on foods humans have eaten for thousands of years.

There are No Health Reasons to Avoid High Quality Animal Products

While many vegans claim that the nutritional benefits of avoiding animal products are vast, really there are no health reasons to avoid high quality animal products.

And don’t just take my word for it, check out this study that found red meat eaters to have a lower risk of heart disease and cancer, or this one that proves dietary cholesterol from eggs does not put you at any greater risk of high blood cholesterol levels.

These are just two of many studies that disprove the claims made by many vegans of the anti-health benefits of animal products, which is simply not true.

No Studies Support a Vegan Diet

No controlled studies show that a vegan diet is better for your health than any other diet. In fact, the low-carb, higher-fat diet model (just the opposite of the vegan diet) has been shown in multiple studies to be far more effective than the vegan diet for weight loss, decreased blood pressure and triglycerides, not to mention it has been shown to be far easier to follow (meaning a better chance you’ll stick to it).

The bottom line is this: while some people might find they feel better temporarily on a vegan diet, this is usually due to a sudden and drastic increase in fresh vegetables and omission of processed foods.

Again, while it’s important to eat plenty of veggies, most people will find that, after awhile, they begin feeling deficient in important micro and macronutrients on a vegan diet. Don’t get fooled by the hype, and rest assured that eating meat and animal products is truly the best thing for your health.

These low carb, ketogenic and Paleo friendly fat bombs with dark chocolate are just the thing when you want a healthy treat after dinner or something to tide you over until the next meal. Dark chocolate is a good source of magnesium. Coconut butter and grass fed butter have many benefits for brain health.

Coconut oil is easy to digest while grass fed butter is high in vitamin A and D which support the immune system. Almond butter is high in vitamin E which helps us have youthful skin. These are naturally sugar free and can be sweetened with your choice of stevia, Erythritol, or coconut sugar based on your preference and diet choices.

Dark Chocolate Low Carb Ketogenic Fat Bombs

Prep time: 10 minutes (60 minutes inactive)

Cook Time: 10 minutes

Serves: 12 servings

Ingredients:

1/2 cup almond butter (order here) or unsweetened peanut butter (order here)

1/2 cup grass fed butter or coconut oil (order here)

3 oz 85 % (or higher) dark chocolate  (order here)

1 scant teaspoon stevia extract (order here) or 1/4 cup swerve (order here) or 1/4 cup coconut sugar (Paleo Option, not Keto)

1/4 teaspoon sea salt (order here)

Instructions:

Heat up a few cups of water in a saucepan over medium high heat and place a pyrex bowl on top. Add all the ingredients and melt them all together until smooth and well combined. Pour into silicone mold or a lined candy dish. Freeze the candies for 1 hour before serving. Store in the refrigerator 1-2 weeks. Keep them in the freezer or refrigerator until right before serving.

Nutrition Facts:  Calories: 96, Protein: .4 g, Fat: 10.5 g, Total Carb: 6g, Net Carb: 5.6g, , Fiber: .4g (nutrition facts based on 12 servings)

When I was 3 years old my parents got divorced and it was really sad, but the best thing that happened was that I ended up with two mothers! I am lucky that I have two great women to lead me through life and offer amazing support.

Having two mom’s meant that I had to find two gifts to give each of them on this special day, which was no big deal.  Even though I live 3000 miles away from them I still send gifts every Mother’s day. They listen to me too and I have had some nutritional influence over each of them. They both have real food/gluten free success stories that you can read about here and here.

Paleo and Real Foodies Mother’s Day Guide

These are some gifts I am considering for my MOM’s (or myself ) this year.  Mother’s day is mid May so mark your calendar and do something nice this year for your hard working Mom. 

You don’t need to spend a lot just consider making a bath salt  or a green tea mask. Also there is a wonderful grapefruit scrub or face serum. Just spending time with my mom makes her happy. I can take her for a walk or a coffee and she is thrilled. But if your mom wants a little more then consider more tangible options as you scroll down.

Instant Pot Pressure Cooker

This has been on my list for a while, I am die hard crock-pot person but I hear great things from my sister about the instant pot. I think this would take away the fear of a regular pressure cooker as I tend to multi-task and burn things up. This one has all the safety features for the forgetful as well as making yogurt and 30 minute bone broth, oh my! order on Amazon prime here.

Stick/ Hand Blender

This hand blender is absolutely my favorite kitchen tool. I am a connoisseur of soup and this one whips up a creamy bisque in no time. I have tried others but this one packs the power your are looking for. This one also comes with a mini chopper attachment, a whisk for easy mayo and a smoothie cup.

Programmable Slow Cooker

If you do not have a slow cooker yet I do not know how you survive. Even a person like me, who works from home and not in an office, has a constant pot of broth simmering at all times. I love waking up to warm stew or roast when I don’t feel like cooking or washing dishes.

This one from Hamilton Beach is reported to be lead free from several reliable foodie/blogger friends. I don’t have this one yet but I covet it and would be so happy to get it on mother’s day! It has a meat thermometer and set it and forget it timer that stays on warm once your food is cooked. This is a must for a busy Paleo Mom!
